23 April 2010 Previews Blogging: April Edition - Everything Else
Every month, I go through Diamond's Previews to figure out what I want. From now until, I will blog about what I see that catches my attention. Keep in mind that most of my comic buying consist of #1s, collected editions (hardcovers or TPBs), or OGN (original graphic novels). I buy #1s to see if it's something that I will get later in a collected edition.

This covers everything else in Previews.

Page 218: Cerebus Guide of Self Publishing Expanded Edition (Aardvark/Vanaheim)
As a comic book self publisher, I'm really interested to see what new material does Sim have that's included in this update. Even the $18, isn't enough to chase me off this time.

Page 224: Mouse Guard: Legends of the Guard #2 (of 4) (Archaia)
It's Mouse Guard so I'm getting it. Even though I'm sure that Archaia will publish a hard cover, I'm getting all the singles. This issue features stories by Gene Ha and Sean Rubin (as well as Mr Petersen).

Page 250: Robert E. Howard's Hawk of Outremer #1 (of 4) (Boom!)
There are very few Howard characters that I like beyond Conan, but I am willing to give them all a try.

Page 252: Darkwing Duck: The Duck Knight Returns #1 (of 4)
Darkwing Duck was one of my favorite cartons growing up. he is the terror that flap in the night. I just may splurge on this one and get the $25 HC if it's offered.

Page 287: Legend of Percevan: The Seven Seals
This the 4th book int he series the Legend of Percevan. This is the first time I've heard of this book, so I'm off to seek the others! It looks like an English translation of a French series. I really wish we got more reprints of European works in the US.

Page 294: Stardrop Volume 1 GN
This new book by Mark Oakley made me realize how much I missed Thieves and Kings. Time to save up my coins and buy the entire run of books from M'Oak.

Page 310: Judge Dredd: The Complete Case Files Volume 1 GN
If this was in hard cover format, I would definitely buy it and the others that are sure to follow. In SC, I'm not sure it's worth while to me.

...and that's it for this month.
Join me next month when I do this all over again.

21 April 2010 Previews Blogging: April Dark Horse, DC, IDW, and Image Edition
Every month, I go through Diamond's Previews to figure out what I want. I blog about what I see that catches my attention. Keep in mind that most of my comic buying consist of #1s, collected editions (hardcovers or TPBs), or OGN (original graphic novels). I buy #1s to see if it's something that I will get later in a collected edition

This is the Dark Horse, DC, IDW and Image Edition.

DARK HORSE

Page 35: King Conan Volume 1
I'm not a big fan of King Conan, but it's a Conan reprint project, so I'm supporting it.

Page 43: Flash Gordon Comic Book Archives Volume 1
I really wish I knew what was in this book. I really enjoyed the Alex Raymond strips but not so much the Mac Raboy ones. I'm not familiar enough with the Flash Gordon comics to know what adventures are contained within and for $50, I really need more information about the contents.

Page 44: Abe Sapien: The Abyssal Plain #1 (of 2)
Dave Johnson is one of the best cover artist in comics. His senses of color, composition and design are unmatched. I wish he would do a compilation of all his cover work.

Page 47: Eerie Archives Volume 5
These Eerie and Creepy collections are my favorite reprint collections. Now that Vampirella is at Dynamite, maybe they can work with Dark Horse to reprint the Warren Vampirella books.

DC COMICS
JMS is writing Superman and Wonder Woman. Can Batman be too far behind? It really doesn't matter as I have very little interest in most DC superheroes.

Page 76: The Joker's Asylum
June has 5 weeks, so it's special event time! This time it's a series of Batman villain one shots. These are often very forgettable, but a couple of these have interesting artist/character pairings. I'm interested in the Harley Quinn one with Joe Quinones art and the Sienkiewicz Mad Hatter. None of the writers stand out, so these are interesting to me solely based on the artists involved.

Page 100:
Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader? TP
Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow? TP
One by Neil Gaiman which is sure to become a modern classic, the other by Alan Moore which is already a classic. I've never read either, but based upon the accolades thrown at both of these, I look forward to being entertained by them.

Page 102: Superman Vs Muhammad Ali Deluxe Edition HC
There's the facsimilae edition at the same tabloid size as the original., but a hardcover for $40, but I'm going with the cheaper 96 paged Deluxe Edition. I think this is a book that every comic book fan should have.

Page 107: Tom Strong and the Robots of Doom #1
Tom Strong was by far my favorites of the ABC line. I'm very happy to see him returning from the abyss. I'm not sure how well I will like him with a writer other than Alan Moore, but I'm willing to give Peter Hogan a chance.

IDW PUBLISHING
IDW is now a premiere publisher and has joined DC, Dark Horse and Image in the front of Previews. Their growth is largely due to their excellent handling of licensed books. I'm not a fan of most of their licensed books, but I'm happy to see them succeed.

Page 159: Tribes: The Dog Years
I know next to nothing about this other than it look beautiful. After a quick search, I see that there is an online line version and it's stunning. I'm going to wait and read this in print, but for those that can't wait do a search on Google and you'll find the online comic.

IMAGE COMICS

Page 181: Sea Bear and Grizzly Shark #1
This is just silliness and pure fun. A shark on land! A Grizzly in the ocean! They really got mixed up! Comics that aren't to be taken seriously are so hard to find. I wish Ottley and howard much luck with this one shot.

Page 194: Savage Dragon #161
I avoid reading the solicitation text for Savage Dragon because I don't want to have any clue about what may happen. This is a must buy every month for me.

And that brings this portion of my Previews walkthrough to an end. Join me back here for the next (and final) section for this month.

19 April 2010 Previews Blogging: April Marvel Edition
Every month, I go through Diamond's Previews to figure out what I want. From now until, I will blog about what I see that catches my attention. Keep in mind that most of my comic buying consist of #1s, collected editions (hardcovers or TPBs), or OGN (original graphic novels). I buy #1s to see if it's something that I will get later in a collected edition.

Marvel
I start with Marvel because I buy a fair amount of Marvel and they are outside the main book in their own little booklet. When Marvel joins the rest of Previews, then they will cease to be first

Page 12: The Stand: Hardcases #1 (of 5)
I'm still enjoying Marvel's adaptation of the Stand. This new mini series means there's a new hardcover on the way. It's been a while since I last read the book. It may be time to revisit it.

I think it's odd that the series artist, Mike Perkins, is doing the variant cover and not the regular cover.

Page 15: Sky Doll: Space Ship #2 (of 2)
All the Soleil books have been packaged into hard covers, however, this mini series is less than 100 pages. I've enjoyed all the Soleil books that I've purchased, but I'm not so sure I would enjoy this one at the same price point as the others.

Page 16: X-Campus #1 (of 2)
I'm checking this out in because I like X-Men as a concept, I just don't like the execution of the books. Maybe European creators can bring something different to the concept to make in more enjoyable for me. I'm confused as to why Marvel would have Nauck do a cover for a European reprint, but this cover looks much better than the last work I saw from him.

Lots and lots of Deadpool stuff that I have no interest in. Skipping it all, but I thought I would mention it because Deadpool is apparently all over everywhere.

Page 31: Avengers Academy #1
I liked the Initiative title as a concept and read the first 12 or so issues, but became bored as Secret Invasion swept the book.  Since I'm giving all the new Avengers title a chance, I figured I'd check this one out too. The latest information about the return of Speedball as well as Tigra and Pym being teachers is pulling at my love of the New Warriors and West Coast Avengers.

Page 32: New Avengers #1
We have Avengers, Secret Avengers and now New Avengers, Marvel seems to be milking this for all that it's worth. Wolverine and Spidey seem to be on both New and adjectiveless Avenger teams, so I wonder how that will work out. The Thing seems to be the big man on the team and I imgine that Cage will be leading the team. The Thing is really the only team player of the group shown, so I wonder how long this roster will last.

Page 37: New Avengers: Luke Cage #3 (of 3)
The end of the mini series means another Eric Canete collection is coming my way soon. Canete has long been one of my favorite comic book artists, so I look forward to each one of his projects being collected.

Page 40: Captain America: The 1940s Newspaper Strip #1 (of 3)
For me, I'm sold with Karl Kesel. His Flash strip in Wednesday Comics, was by far one of the most innovative homages of the comic strip. However, Marvel has a way of destroying comic strips by formatting them all wrong. I'll be eying the collection of these strips.

Page 47: Hulk #23
At last the origin of the Red Hulk! And I don't care. 23 issues to get to the origin? Why even bother? Hulk really jumped the shark for me after World War Hulk. I've been keeping an eye of Son of Hulk and Skaar, but the main titles have really been unappealing. It's really a shame since Planet Hulk had me reading hulk for the first time since Bruce Jones began his run.

Page 51: Hawkeye & Mockingbird #1
The title says it all. Want me to buy a book? Then put my favorite West Coast Avengers couple together in the book. I'm sold, but I give this book 12 issues before cancellation. Neither Hawkeye or Mockingbird have ever carried a book for too long and while I hope this one lasts a while, I'm not too optimistic.

Page 91: The Stand: Soul Survivors Premiere HC
See a new hardcover collecting the most recently ended mini series.

Page 92: Siege Premiere HC
I'll probably wait for the TPB for this collection. I like catching up on Marvel's event via collections because usually by the time the TPB hits the stands, I just don't care any more. It saves me money especially since the events seems to just keep coming.

Page 96: Ultimate Comics Avengers: Next Generation Premiere HC
At least it's not the Ultimate Comics Ultimates as that would just be a stupid name. Mark Millar usually put together an entertaining read with his patented sequences designed to shock your senses. I read the first issue and the story and especially the art were enough to convince me to pick this up.

Page 98: Marvels: Eye of the Camera Premiere HC
Kurt Busiek is one of my favorite superhero writers. Marvels was one of my favorite Marvel stories. this "sequel" has been a long time in the making and it has been a long wait to finally get to this book. I expect Jay Anacleto's art to be breath taking, I just wish they would feature it in black and white.

Page 100: Daffodil Premiere HC
Soleil has produced some of the best stories published by Marvel. I don't expect this collection to be any different. It's great to be able to great European comics translated into English for the non bilingual masses (like me) to enjoy.

That's end my trip through Marvel's Previews. Join me back here for the front of the main Previews book.
